How to Apply Southern Girl Customs DTF Transfers

Follow these DTF pressing instructions to achieve a smooth, vibrant, and durable finish. Correct temperature, pressure, pressing time, and peeling are essential for a successful application.

Because heat presses, garments, and fabrics can vary, these settings should be treated as a recommended starting point. Always test a sample when working with an unfamiliar garment or material. Any application instructions included with your order should take priority.

Recommended DTF Heat Press Settings

• Temperature: 300°F / approximately 149°C

• Pressing time: 12–15 seconds

• Pressure: Medium to firm

• Peel: Follow the peel instructions supplied with your transfer

• Final press: 5–10 seconds

A professional heat press is strongly recommended. Household irons and handheld presses may not provide consistent heat and pressure across the entire design.

Step 1: Prepare the Garment

Place the garment flat on the heat press and make sure the application area is clean, dry, and free from wrinkles.

Check for:

• Seams

• Collars

• Pockets

• Buttons

• Zippers

• Thick fabric areas

These areas can prevent even pressure. Use a pressing pillow or pad when necessary to create a flat pressing surface.

Step 2: Pre-Press the Garment

Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.

Moisture trapped inside the fabric can interfere with adhesion, so do not skip this step.

Step 3: Position the DTF Transfer

Place the transfer on the garment with the printed design facing down and the film facing upward.

Make sure the design is:

• Straight

• Centered

• Positioned at the desired height

• Completely inside the pressing area

Use heat-resistant tape if necessary to prevent the transfer from shifting.

Step 4: Press the Transfer

Press the transfer at 300°F for 12–15 seconds using medium to firm pressure.

The heat press should apply even pressure across the entire design. Do not move or slide the press during application.

Step 5: Peel the Film

Follow the peel method provided with your transfer:

• Hot peel: Remove the film immediately after pressing.

• Warm peel: Wait a few seconds, then peel while the transfer is still warm.

• Cold peel: Allow the transfer to cool completely before removing the film.

Peel the film slowly and smoothly from one corner.

If any part of the design begins lifting, stop peeling, place the film back down, and press again for several seconds using slightly more pressure.

Step 6: Complete the Final Press

After removing the film, cover the design with parchment paper, butcher paper, or a reusable finishing sheet.

Press again for 5–10 seconds using the same medium to firm pressure. This final press helps improve adhesion, durability, and the finished appearance.

Do not use wax paper.

Fabric-Specific Recommendations

Cotton and Cotton Blends

Begin with:

• Temperature: 300°F

• Time: 12–15 seconds

• Pressure: Medium to firm

Polyester and Heat-Sensitive Fabrics

Polyester and performance materials may require a lower temperature to reduce the risk of scorching, shine, or dye migration.

Begin with:

• Temperature: 275–290°F

• Time: 10–12 seconds

• Pressure: Medium

Always perform a test press and review the garment manufacturer’s heat recommendations before production.

DTF Pressing Tips

• Use a reliable heat press with even temperature and pressure.

• Pre-press every garment to remove moisture and wrinkles.

• Confirm that the transfer is facing the correct direction.

• Keep the design away from seams, pockets, collars, and zippers.

• Use a pressing pillow when the surface is uneven.

• Do not use steam.

• Do not guess the pressure—check that the press closes firmly and evenly.

• Test unfamiliar fabrics before pressing a full order.

• Allow the garment to cool before stretching the printed area.

DTF Transfer Troubleshooting

The Transfer Is Lifting

Possible causes include:

• Insufficient pressure

• Pressing temperature was too low

• Pressing time was too short

• The garment contained moisture

• The film was peeled incorrectly

• A seam or raised area prevented even pressure

Place the film back over the design and press again for 5–10 seconds using slightly firmer pressure.

The Transfer Looks Scorched or Shiny

The temperature may be too high, or the garment may be heat-sensitive. Reduce the temperature and pressing time, and test another garment before continuing.

The Design Has Uneven Adhesion

Uneven adhesion is often caused by inconsistent pressure. Make sure the garment lies completely flat and that no seams, pockets, buttons, or zippers are interfering with the press.

Colors Are Showing Through the Transfer

This may be dye migration, which can occur with certain polyester or sublimated garments. Use a lower pressing temperature and test the fabric before completing the order.

Care Instructions After Pressing

For the best durability:

• Wait at least 24 hours before washing

• Turn the garment inside out

• Machine wash in cold water

• Use a mild detergent

• Wash with similar colors

• Do not use bleach

• Avoid fabric softener when possible

• Tumble dry on low or hang dry

• Do not dry-clean

• Do not iron directly over the design

If ironing is necessary, turn the garment inside out and use a low-temperature setting.
